Note: The latest information is that the Boaters Advisory Panel and the RBBA may have prevailed on the Harbor Patrol issue. However, it's not over yet and we plan to track these issue and take action if required.

Boaters, your fees are going up!!

The city manager of Redondo Beach has proposed the following in his budget.

  1. Disband the Harbor Patrol to save money.
  2. Impose a $5 per month per slip fee to pay for harbor dredging.
  3. Use the money saved by the fee to build the bike path through the marina.
  4. Resubmit the Heart of the City plan with only the density at the AES site reduced.

The Redondo Beach Boaters Association (RBBA) has studied these issues and is taking action to represent the boaters within the harbor. We are working with the Boaters Advisory Panel to testify at public hearings about these issues. We need your support in these efforts. We need you to join us by becoming members. The more boaters we have as official members of our organization, the more resources we have to work on these issues and the more our testimony means when we go to bat for you.

Let’s take a look at the budget issues:

  1. Disband the Harbor Patrol.

Can you as a boater and user of the harbor imagine what it would be like without a harbor patrol?  Think of the Wild West atmosphere that would exist between the jet skis, fishing skiffs, kayaks, canoes, sail and powerboats. The boater carrying the biggest gun would rule. Who would prevent you from being blown into the rocks if you lost power; the commercial towing service out of San Pedro? That’s what our city manager says. This proposal is so ludicrous; that we don’t believe it has a chance of being adopted. However we have been surprised in the past; who knows?

    2. Impose a $5 per month dredging fee

The city has a huge budget problem due to the loss of State monies. The perception among many is that the boaters are a rich class of citizens who can easily afford more fees. They don’t realize that most of us are average people who have had to give up other things in order to be able to afford our boating hobby. They don’t realize that 27% of our slip fees are now going to the city for harbor purposes. Do you think for a minute that if this goes through it will be the last of it? If we allow this fee  to take effect, look for increases in the future and the fee to never end.

  1. Use our fee increase to pay for the bike path.

Talk about insult to injury. It sounds like the city manager is intentionally trying to arouse us to action. Can you imagine the scenario where we are paying $5 a month for the privilege of seeing bikers riding past our marina gates and causing us to dodge them to get to our slips. This is a major cannonball across our bow and we better stand up for our rights.

  1. Resubmit the old Heart of the City Plan.

There are many in the city that will fight this one. We need to be aware of what is happening and continue our effort with the Boaters Advisory Panel. We must make sure that whatever new plan evolves; that the boaters interest is taken into account. Most of the people in Redondo don’t own boats and don’t realize what our needs are. However they are reasonable people and will help us out if we can continue to make them aware of our legitimate concerns.

If you care about the harbor, help us out by joining us. You are spending thousands of dollars to keep your boat in the harbor. Help protect your harbor by joining us. For the cost of a good dinner ($25), you can be a member of the RBBA for a year. You owe it to yourself and your harbor to join us now.
